Sequence: 18 – Schism

: 196—01

CLARKE " Oh, my God. "

VFX

: 196—01

She rushes to the aid of Dyson, who is slumped against the science station.

: 196—01

INT. AEROFOX

The airlock opens. Baxter is the first inside.

: 196—02

Baxter places a hand on his head as Clarke closes the hatch.

: 196—03

Her touch causes the inert Dyson to slump against her arm.

: 196—04

Baxter catches his lifeless body and gently lays it on the floor.

: 196—05

She sits down against the central column and cradles Dyson's torso in her arms.

: 196—06

Clarke takes a knee nearby and turns to look at Omni.

: 196—07

CLARKE (CONT’D) " What happened to the nanotreatment? "

VFX

: 196—08

OMNI " Kyle ended it. He worked until his injuries became lethal. "

VFX

: 196—09

OMNI(remorseful) " I watched him die. "

: 196—10

BAXTER " If only we'd gotten here sooner. "

VFX

: 196—11

Omni’s animated infinity symbol droops and moves slowly.

VFX

: 196—12

OMNI " It wouldn't have mattered. His life functions had terminated before I contacted you in the crater. "

: 196—13

CLARKE " What? You lied to us! "

VFX

: 196—14

OMNI " No. I said he was 'non-responsive'. That was the truth. "

VFX

: 196—15

OMNI (pained) " It was Kyle's final request to force you to return. "

: 196—16

CLARKE " He sacrificed his life?! Why? "

VFX

: 196—17

OMNI " I’ll let him explain. He left you a message. "

VFX

: 196—18

Dyson appears on-screen above the science station. Pale, shaking, and covered in a fevered sweat, he speaks quietly.

VFX

: 196—19

DYSON (ON MONITOR) " Hey, guys... If you’re seeing this, you made it back. Hopefully before that damned firewall got uploaded. "

VFX

: 196—20

The screen shows Dyson on the left and data on the right.

VFX

: 196—21

DYSON (ON MONITOR) (CONT’D) " I analyzed your geoglyph sample. I also ran through the logs of the shield system. The organism tried to communicate several times. "

VFX

: 196—22

DYSON (ON MONITOR) (CONT’D) (breathing in pain) " Only when those attempts failed did it strike out to protect itself. "

VFX

: 196—23

The logs pop up showing the SPIKES in energy input.

VFX

: 196—24

DYSON (ON MONITOR) (CONT’D) " Notice I said ‘geoglyph’ not ‘geoglyphs’. That’s right. We’re dealing with one individual. A single interconnected being. "

VFX

: 196—25

An orbital image of the geoglyph formation appears.

DYSON (ON MONITOR) (CONT’D) " It’s like a giant solar cell spread across the entire sunward side. (rubs his eyes) It’s evolved to absorb stellar flares... Living off them. "

VFX

: 196—26

DYSON (ON MONITOR) (CONT’D) (struggling to breathe) " It even powers the volcanos -- part of why this planet has such a thick C-O-2 atmosphere. "

: 196—27

Still holding Dyson, Baxter sees his gyroscope on the floor.

VFX

: 196—28

DYSON (ON MONITOR) (CONT’D) " Darcy, I know you’re pissed. But don’t be. I had to figure this out. We have to learn to live with it-- "

VFX

: 196—29

The recording is cut off as Clarke stalks forward in anger and slams a button on the console.

VFX

: 196—30

CLARKE " That thing shut down the shield. Crashed the AstroBug! Killed Jim! And Kyle died to protect it? "

VFX

: 196—31

OMNI " He died to expose the truth. "

: 196—32

CLARKE " What truth? "

VFX

: 196—33

OMNI " That this is a sentient lifeform. And that we attacked it first. "

: 196—34

BAXTER " And now we’ve got Shepard on his way -- planning to kill it. I designed the shield to save lives not end them! "

: 196—35

CLARKE " Goddamn it! I told the Captain the truth. We have an enemy on this planet and it doesn’t want us here! "

VFX

: 196—36

OMNI " I doubt it's that discerning. While it may perceive computers like me as a form of life, humans would be virtually incomprehensible to it. "

: 196—37

CLARKE " Whatever. "

: 196—38

Baxter claps back at Clarke angrily.

: 196—39

BAXTER " You know... If we could find a way to talk to it, you might be shocked at how irrelevant you really are. "

: 196—40

Clarke decides not to respond. She looks to the door.

: 196—41

CLARKE " We need to get back to that shield. (to Baxter) First, I need your help outside. "

: 196—42

BAXTER " With what? "

: 196—43

CLARKE " Giving my friend Kyle a decent burial. I’m all that’s left of the Mod Squad. It’s the least I can do. "

VFX

: 197—01

EXT. PROXIMA B, ORBIT

Seen from space, the perpetual terminator storm rages.

: 198—01

EXT. AEROFOX, LANDING SITE

It's snowing heavily. About thirty meters from the ship, the women pile the last ROCKS on a BURIAL MOUND.

: 198—02

As a finishing touch, Clarke kneels, placing Dyson's gyroscope on top.

: 198—03

CLARKE " He wanted to call this planet ‘Persephone’. We should honor that. "

: 198—04

BAXTER " I agree. Listen, kiddo, we better get back for the rad treatment. "

: 198—05

Clarke stands up. Her body language is aggressive.

: 198—06

CLARKE " Fine... I just hate the idea of sitting around for hours when we could be out there doing something. "

: 198—07

Baxter steps in front of Clarke to face her.

: 198—08

BAXTER " What we should be doing is waiting for the Captain and his science team. But after your bullshit message, you’ve got him planning for a war we can’t even fight. "

: 198—09

CLARKE " But we can! With your shield, we can kill it. "

: 198—10

The reference to her invention infuriates Baxter.

: 198—11

BAXTER " I told you no! Over my dead body. (pulling herself together) Darcy, think about it. If the people who planned to settle this planet knew there was an organism covering half of it, they never would’ve sent us. "

: 198—12

CLARKE " That’s your opinion. Maybe they would’ve done whatever was necessary to save humanity. "

: 198—13

BAXTER " What if we changed the plan? We could land everyone on the dark side and leave the other hemisphere for the geoglyph. "

: 198—14

CLARKE " No! The algae farms and hab-modules are over there. It's not like we can move them to this hellhole. "

: 198—15

BAXTER " The day side isn’t a Garden of Eden either. From an engineering standpoint, it wouldn’t be any harder to survive over here. "

: 198—16

CLARKE " Are you kidding? Look around! "

: 198—17

BAXTER " We can’t argue about this anymore. Let’s wait until Captain Shepard arrives. He can decide what to do. "

: 198—18

CLARKE " Shepard? He agrees with me! You heard him. He ordered us to fight! "

: 198—19

Baxter puts a matronly hand on Clarke’s shoulder.

: 198—20

BAXTER " I know coming down here has been hard on you. You’ve lost a lot. "

: 198—21

Infuriated, Clarke slaps Baxter’s hand off.

: 198—22

CLARKE " You’re damn right I have. Jim died because of that thing! "

: 198—23

Clarke starts to move. Baxter blocks her path.

: 198—24

BAXTER " Jim died because a micro-meteor struck the AstroBug when he was trying to protect you. The geoglyph had nothing to do with it. "

: 198—25

This revelation enrages Clarke.

: 198—26

Without warning, she punches Baxter square in the stomach!

: 198—27

Caught off guard, Baxter collapses to the ground helpless.

: 198—28

Leaving her behind, Clarke stalks to the TerraCat.

: 198—29

Through a fog of pain, Baxter watches as the vehicle’s doors open...

: 198—30

...and Clarke climbs inside.

: 199—01

INT. TERRACAT

Clarke activates the self-drive and buckles her seatbelt.

: 199—02

CLARKE " Take me to Shield Node Two-Twelve. "

: 199—03

TERRACAT " Destination acquired. Arrival in five hours and twelve minutes. "

: 200—01

EXT. LANDING SITE

The TerraCat pulls away. Baxter stumbles in front of it.

: 201—01

INT. TERRACAT

Baxter appears in the headlights, waving her arms.

" Pedestrian detected. "

: 202—01

EXT. LANDING SITE

The rover swerves and drives off toward the mountains.

: 202—02

Clutching her abdomen, Baxter watches it cruise away.

: 203—01

INT. AEROFOX, LOWER LEVEL

The hatch opens.

: 203—02

Baxter falls to the floor.

VFX

: 203—03

OMNI " What happened? "

: 203—04

BAXTER " Clarke took off in the Cat! "

: 203—05

The airlock door closes. Baxter props against it.

VFX

: 203—06

OMNI " She cannot reprogram the nodes! "

: 203—07

BAXTER " I know! I couldn't stop her. "

VFX

: 203—08

OMNI " Maybe I can. "

VFX

: 203—09

A schematic of the TerraCat appears on-screen above the science station.

VFX

: 204—01

EXT. PROXIMA B, MOUNTAINS

The rover is heading back to the canyon entrance.

: 205—01

INT. TERRACAT

Clarke sits, head in hands. She’s lost in thought and a haze of radiation sickness.

VFX

: 205—02

Suddenly, the rover’s self-drive goes offline.

: 205—03

The altered movement catches her attention.

VFX

: 205—04

CLARKE " TerraCat, what's going on?! "

VFX

: 206—01

EXT. PROXIMA B, MOUNTAINS

The vehicle quickly comes to a stop and then reverses course.

INT. TERRACAT

Omni's male voice replaces the feminine TerraCat interface.

OMNI I'm bringing you back. Then I want you to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over.

VFX

: 207—02

CLARKE " You son-of-a-bitch. "

: 207—03

Clarke is enraged.

: 207—04

She looks around the cab.

: 207—05

Spying the rover’s COMM-MODULE, she pieces it together.

: 207—06

Clarke unbuckles her safety belt.

: 207—07

Reaching to the rover’s ceiling, she rips the comm-module out of its slot.

: 208—01

EXT. PROXIMA B, MOUNTAINS

Minus its virtual pilot, the rover screeches to a stop!

: 209—01

INT. TERRACAT

Clarke loses her grip and is thrown to the floor.

: 209—02

She rolls onto her feet -- tosses the interface -- then slides into the driver's seat.

: 209—03

Her chair rotates into the drive position.

: 209—04

She finds and presses the MANUAL MODE button.

" CLARKE Screw it. I can do this. "

VFX

: 209—05

Clarke pulls up the map to Node 212.

: 209—06

She begins driving.

VFX

: 210—01

EXT. PROXIMA B, MOUNTAINS

The rover peels off erratically and heads to the mountains.

INT. AEROFOX, LOWER LEVEL

Baxter stands at the science station. She sees the TerraCat heading away on one of the monitors.

VFX

: 211—02

OMNI " She disabled the self-drive. I'm sorry. "

: 211—03

Baxter pulls up the ship's communication system.

: 211—04

BAXTER " Darcy, come in. This isn't just about the shield. "

: 212—01

INT. TERRACAT

BAXTER (COMM VOICE) " You need to do the rad-therapy or you'll die! Goddammit, talk to m-- "

: 212—02

Clarke sneers, switching off the comm-system.
