Reel 6: 217—01
EXT. DESERT
The rover is back on the sunward side of the planet.
It kicks up dust, maneuvering through the desert in the orange light.
[Shot from behind the TerraCat as it speeds into the plains, star blazing on the horizon above.]
INT. TERRACAT
A weary and sleep-deprived Clarke drives with great effort. She's clearly not well.
A pale sweat betrays a high fever.
A glint of light flares on the horizon. Clarke slows the rover.
Suddenly, Corey’s AstroBug is sitting in the desert directly in front of her -- blocking the way!
Clarke comes to a stop.
She stares at the previously-destroyed spacecraft in awe.
It’s completely intact and looks brand new, silhouetted against the bright ochre sphere of Proxima Centauri.
EXT. DESERT, ASTROBUG (HALLUCINATION)
A volcano erupts in the background as an O2-mask wearing Clarke makes her way to the apparition.
The AstroBug's ramp is extended, leading to the lower hatch.
Clarke walks toward it.
Unexpectedly, Jim Corey is standing in the entryway wearing standard flight coveralls with no envirosuit or mask!
Clarke can’t believe her eyes as he flashes a smile at her.
CLARKE " Jim..? "
Corey turns, entering the open hatch.
She pursues him.
He watches Clarke, then climbs the ladder to the cockpit.
Clarke follows again.
INT. ASTROBUG, COCKPIT (HALLUCINATION)
As Clarke enters the cabin, Corey sits at his pilot’s station.
He admires its curves and instrumentation.
COREY " God. I loved this place. Always felt like I belonged here. I was looking forward to this ship being our home for a while. (smiling) At least until our hab-module was ready. "
Clarke stands at the edge of the ladder.
She looks almost afraid. She doesn't know whether to be happy or sad.
Corey swivels his seat to face her.
COREY (CONT’D) " How are you, babe? "
CLARKE " How do you think?! I miss you! I hate this planet! There’s no point going on. That thing killed you! "
COREY " No, it didn’t. And you know it. "
CLARKE " Then what do you want me to do? "
COREY " This is not about me. It’s about the mission. "
CLARKE " Kyle wanted us to live with it. Coddle it like a pet or something. "
COREY " I’m not sure he saw the big picture. Odyssey’s dying. The crew needs a place to live -- right now. "
CLARKE " But isn’t it wrong to wipe out something that’s existed for billions of years? "
COREY " Ask Darwin, babe. It’s survival of the fittest. The geoglyph fought back. It lost. Time to finish this thing -- once and for all. "
Abruptly, Corey is standing behind Clarke.
He embraces her. She closes her eyes, feeling the warmth of his touch.
He kisses her ear.
Clarke turns and kisses him passionately.
The AstroBug and Corey are gone.
Clarke falls to her knees in tears.
She grabs handfuls of sand, attempting to ground herself.
She stands and tosses the dirt angrily.
She spies the node-board plugged into the dash.
CLARKE " TerraCat, access the node-board. "
TERRACAT " Accessing. "
A wave of nausea -- the outcome of radiation exposure -- hits her hard. She does her best to continue.
CLARKE " I want you to... I want... "
Clarke can't hold back. She turns and throws up into the seat well. She coughs and wipes her mouth, pulling it together.
CLARKE (CONT’D) " I want you to recalibrate. "
TERRACAT " Specify parameters. "
CLARKE " Access the entire shield grid. "
The screen in front of her shows a map of the nodes.
CLARKE (CONT’D) " Install the firewall in all active towers. Increase to maximum output. "
Clarke reaches into a pocket on her suit and pulls out a cardsized, dog-eared printout of the Eiffel Tower.
She looks at it for a moment with emotion, ...
... then stuffs it back in her pocket.
She punches the steering wheel in anger.
Clarke looks forward to where the AstroBug appeared in her vision.
She’s finally able to let go.
CLARKE (CONT’D) " Goodbye, Jim. "
