INT. AEROFOX

Clarke sits at flight controls inside the ship’s instrument-laden cockpit.

VFX

: 005—02

Corey adds his ship’s status to the chatter.

COREY (COMM VOICE) " AstroBug B here. We’re good to go. "

: 005—03

The voice of a female CONTROLLER responds via radio.

: 005—04

CONTROLLER (COMM VOICE) " Roger, Mission One. Stand by. "

VFX

: 005—05

Clarke is focused as she grasps the joystick firmly.

: 010—01

INT. ASTROBUG, COCKPIT

In an equally-modern cockpit, Corey monitors systems.

VFX

: 010—02

He’s anxious as he presses buttons on his console.

: 010—03

Corey glances toward the ship’s other occupant, TANYA BAXTER. The beautiful, yet tired-looking 50-something engineer wears a form-fitting STIM-SUIT -- an electrode-laden unitard that mimics human musculature.

: 010—04

Corey gives Baxter a confident thumbs-up.

: 010—05

She returns the gesture with muted enthusiasm.

: 011—01

INT. AEROFOX

Clarke glances at a PHOTO of a YOUNG GIRL affixed to her console.

: 011—02

The child poses with her 30-something PARENTS. They wear spacesuits and big smiles as they stand on a futuristic HANGAR DECK.

: 011—03

Clarke nods to them confidently.

: 011—04

Seated nearby, Dyson plays with a toy GYROSCOPE at his console.

VFX

INT. AEROFOX

The noise of the impacts quickly subsides.

: 026—02

As Clarke regains control, Dyson breathes a sigh of relief.

CLARKE " Smart thinking, Jim. "

COREY (COMM VOICE) " Happy to help. "

EXT. SPACE, ABOVE PROXIMA B - TWELVE HOURS LATER

The two ships are stationed in orbit high above the graybrown surface of Proxima B. COMM CHATTER is heard between Clarke and Corey as the AeroFox releases a SATELLITE.

VFX

: 035—02

CLARKE (COMM VOICE) " Okay, Jim. Just deployed Sat-B. Two down. One to go. Link when ready. "

VFX

: 035—03

COREY (COMM VOICE) " Copy. Signal’s loud and clear. "

VFX

: 035—04

The AeroFox moves away as SOLAR PANELS unfurl on the satellite.

VFX

: 035—05

It fires thrusters, rotating toward the star.

VFX

: 035—06

The image jumps down to a lower orbit where the AstroBug cruises above the dusty planet. Dyson joins the chatter.

VFX

: 035—07

DYSON (COMM VOICE) " Guys, we have an incoming message from Odyssey. "

: 036—01

INT. AEROFOX

Clarke turns to Dyson who plays with his gyroscope.

[Two Shots of Gyroscope to choose from]

: 036—04

Dyson taps a few buttons on his console.

VFX

: 036—05

A GRAPHIC pops up showing the star system and the position of their mothership.

VFX

: 036—06

Dyson activates the comm system. An image of the Odyssey MISSION PATCH -- the icon of an ancient sailing ship placed between white and red stars -- appears onscreen.

VFX

: 036—07

The scene jumps to a video of Captain Shepard sitting at his station. Crew members pass behind him, checking systems.

VFX

: 036—08

SHEPARD (ON SCREEN) " We received the message that you settled into orbit. Looks good. "

VFX

: 037—01

EXT. SPACE, ABOVE PROXIMA B

The AstroBug cruises above the planet.

VFX

: 037—02

SHEPARD (COMM VOICE) " We’ll complete our final capture maneuver around Proxima Centauri in about forty-three hours. "

: 038—01

INT. ASTROBUG, COCKPIT

Simultaneously, BAXTER listens in.

: 038—02

SHEPARD (ON SCREEN) " We’ll be thawing out the popsicles as soon as we arrive. We’re going to have a lot of tired and disoriented people on our hands."

: 038—02

COREY (turns, wincing) " I know. Sorry."

: 038—03

As Shepard talks, an annoyed Baxter turns to Corey.

: 038—03

BAXTER " ‘Popsicle’. That’s just so stupid. "

: 038—03

Baxter shrugs in frustration. She wears a STIMSUIT -- a tight unitard, the same color scheme as the other uniforms. It features a medical display and electrodes across the body.

: 038—04

SHEPARD (ON SCREEN) " I just got this from Comms."

VFX

: 038—05

The image splits to reveal an onscreen graphic that shows signals unable to travel between Odyssey and the planet.

: 038—07

The image returns to Shepard by himself.

SHEPARD (ON SCREEN) (CONT’D) " You guys got this."

: 039—01

INT. AEROFOX

Clarke and Dyson listen intently.

VFX

: 039—02

SHEPARD (ON SCREEN) " Jim-bo’s on point. Darcy and Kyle, observe and provide support. Follow Engineer Baxter’s lead. That shield is her design. "

VFX

: 040—01

INT. ASTROBUG, COCKPIT

The onscreen image shifts from the Captain to a MAP of Proxima b.

VFX

: 040—02

It shows an array of interlinked TOWERS spanning thousands of miles across the sunward hemisphere.

VFX

: 040—03

SHEPARD (ON SCREEN) " And, Ms. Baxter, I want to apologize... "

: 040—04

Baxter is startled by the mention of her name as if the Captain personally witnessed her encroaching exhaustion.

VFX

: 040—05

SHEPARD (ON SCREEN) (CONT’D) " I know the past few days haven’t been easy. This emergency forced us to wake you sooner than planned. But I know you. You’ll be fine."

VFX

: 040—06

Shepard switches focus, reinforcing Corey’s orders.

SHEPARD (ON SCREEN) (CONT’D) " Jim’s orders are to keep the mission in orbit. The gravity down there is higher than Earth. I know you aren’t prepared for it. "

: 040—07

BAXTER (under her breath) " You’re telling me."

: 041—01

INT. AEROFOX

As Shepard concludes, Clarke nods her head slowly.

VFX

: 041—02

SHEPARD (ON SCREEN) " That said, if you need to land, do so. Fix that shield and take off as quickly as you can. (smiling warmly) That’s about it. Good luck. I wish I was there with you. Shepard out. "

VFX

: 041—03

The transmission ends.

VFX

: 042—01

EXT. SPACE, ABOVE PROXIMA B

The AstroBug spins to better observe the planet.

VFX

: 042—01

Down below, the GEOGLYPHS -- bizarre formations of semi-straight lines radiating across the surface -- slide into view.

VFX

: 042—02

Vast in scale, they resemble ancient human-made geometrical patterns.

VFX

: 043—01

INT. ASTROBUG, COCKPIT

As the cabin rotates, Corey looks at Proxima b through his forward windscreen.

: 043—02

He’s astounded by the view.

: 044—01

INT. AEROFOX

Dyson fidgets at his keyboard. Blurry planetary formations appear onscreen.

VFX

: 044—02

DYSON " I think this telescope sucks. OH, can you enhance the view? "

VFX

: 044—03

OH " Absolutely. "

: 044—05

Dyson nods and smiles.

DYSON " Thanks, buddy. "

: 044—06

COREY (ON SCREEN) " Still think they‘re made by aliens? "

: 044—07

Clarke interjects before Corey can respond.

CLARKE " We’re not doing this again. "

: 045—01

INT. ASTROBUG, COCKPIT

Baxter is annoyed by the banter.

: 045—02

She gets out of her seat holding an AUTOBREW, a circular coffee decanter, and floats toward the FOOD STATION.

: 045—03

Corey continues the conversation.

COREY " I wanna hear what he thinks. "

: 045—04

Baxter arrives at the station and fills the unit with water.

VFX

: 045—05

DYSON (ON SCREEN) " It’s weird. They look shriveled up."

: 045—06

COREY " Compared to what? "

: 046—01

INT. AEROFOX

Dyson compares the telescope view to SATELLITE PHOTOS.

VFX

: 046—02

DYSON " The old Starshot images."

: 046—02

DYSON " They have to be more than that. "

: 046—03

CLARKE " Guys, they’re mineral deposits! "

47TEST—01

47TEST—21

[ The Beacon of the ASTRO BUG flares in the distance ]

47TEST—22

The distance seems insurmountable.

47TEST—23

Clarke looks up. Through a break in the clouds, a brilliant swath of blue AURORAE cascades across the sky.

47TEST—24

Just then, the howling wind increases!

47TEST—25

Immobilized by the sensory overload, she places her hands over her ears and falls to her knees!

47TEST—26

CLARKE (CONT'D): God... Make it stop!

Desperate, Dyson attempts to console her from afar.

47TEST—27

DYSON (COMM VOICE): Darcy, it’s okay. Try to relax. They warned us about this. ‘Planet sickness’. Remember?

CLARKE: Whatever they said, it didn’t prepare me for this....

47TEST—28

A distant rumble can be heard. Clarke takes her hands away from her head.

CLARKE (CONT'D): You hear that?

DYSON (COMM VOICE) Hear what?

47TEST—29

Clarke looks over at the nearby volcano to her left.

47TEST—30

[ She gasps ]

47TEST—31

She reaches for her Laser Ranger.

47TEST—32

Pulling it to her eyes, she witnesses a spectacular burst of LAVA from its summit!

47TEST—33

[ Through the RANGER she sees the massive eruption up close! ]

47TEST—34

A resultant QUAKE causes cracks in the surrounding ice!

47TEST—35

Clarke is knocked to the ground! She loses her grip on the Laser Ranger and it clatters onto the frozen surface.

CLARKE: AAHHH!

47TEST—36

DYSON (COMM VOICE): Darcy?! You okay? Come in!

47TEST—37

[ Nearby the Ice continues to split and suddenly stops! ]

47TEST—38

CLARKE: That volcano. It’s erupting. Causing quakes. Oh my god, the AstroBug...

47TEST—39

Clarke grabs the binoculars...

47TEST—40

... and frantically looks over at the beacon of the AstroBug.

47TEST—41

[ She Centers on the ASTRO BUG ]

47TEST—42

[ And Zooms in ]

CLARKE (CONT'D): It looks like they're still okay.

47TEST—43

Clarke stands in determination.

CLARKE (CONT'D): I have to get to them...

47TEST—44

CLARKE (CONT'D): While there’s still time.

DYSON (COMM VOICE): I get it. Just be careful!

47TEST—45

CLARKE: I will. Get off the comm and let me focus!

Clarke takes off into the gale of flurries, heading for the AstroBug at a full sprint.

INT. AEROFOX, COCKPIT

As Clarke works at her console, a mischievous expression crosses Dyson’s face as he ponders the previous conversation.

DYSON " Its real name is 'Persephone'. "

: 059—03

CLARKE " Persephone? Since when? "

CLARKE " AstroBug, come in. Do you read me? "

: 059—07

Dyson pulls up a telescopic view on his monitor. He gasps.

VFX

Baxter lugs the white OMNI CUBE.

The hatch moves back to standard position.

VFX

Dyson watches her with empathy from a seat at the science station.

: 131—06

DYSON " Darcy, I don’t know what to say. "

Without making eye contact, Clarke removes the X-Doc from her oxygen pack.

: 131—08

She kneels down and leans it against the column.

VFX

She stands again and presses a button for her pilot’s chair.

: 131—12

Baxter places the Omni Cube on the floor near the burnt-out OH.

: 131—13

She smiles at Dyson sadly.

: 131—14

BAXTER " We brought Omni. "

VFX

DYSON " Thanks. I don’t need it. "

VFX

BAXTER " Jim said you did. "

VFX

: 131—17

DYSON " Things are running well enough. I’d rather not rely on some knock-off. "

VFX

Clarke turns and addresses Dyson with misplaced anger.

: 131—19

CLARKE " Kyle, we don’t have time for this shit. Plug him in and do your job! "

VFX

: 131—20

Dyson is shocked by Clarke’s outburst, but gets it.

: 131—21

DYSON " Sorry. "

VFX

: 131—22

A brooding Clarke sits in her chair and belts in.

VFX

: 131—23

As her chair rises into place, Clarke starts tapping on the computer, plotting a course to the other hemisphere.

VFX

: 131—24

Leaning against the wall, Baxter changes the subject.

BAXTER " Heard you had a rough ride down. "

VFX

: 131—25

DYSON " I’m a little beat up. I’ll live. "

: 131—26

BAXTER " Let’s use the X-Doc to fix you up. "

VFX

: 131—27

DYSON " Can I show you something first? "

: 131—28

BAXTER " Sure. "

: 131—29

Dyson extends the other seat at the science station.

VFX

: 131—33

Dyson causes the non-functional shield nodes to flash.

DYSON (CONT’D) " I ran a comparison of the bad shield nodes and the ore deposits. "

VFX

: 131—34

He turns off the nodes, leaving behind the geoglyph formations.

VFX

: 131—35

Dyson reinstates the map of the shield grid.

DYSON (CONT’D) " Do you see what I'm seeing? Every single corrupted node is located on top of a geoglyph. "

: 131—36

Clarke overhears them as she identifies the closest shield node on her console, NODE 212.

VFX

: 131—37

DYSON (CONT’D) " The nodes that landed on top of the formations are all non-functional. "

VFX

: 131—38

The ones that didn't are at one hundred percent.

VFX

: 131—39

Baxter squints at the map in frustration.

VFX

: 131—40

BAXTER " We need at least ninety-five percent of the nodes functioning or the damn thing won’t work. "

VFX

: 131—41

DYSON " I know. My point is, I think there’s a connection between the geoglyphs and whatever or whomever did this to our shield. "

VFX

: 131—42

BAXTER " Whomever? Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. "

VFX

: 131—43

At her station, Clarke finishes mapping out a route on her computer.

VFX

: 131—44

She’s growing impatient with the conversation.

VFX

: 131—45

DYSON " Fine, maybe I’m wrong. You’re the expert, what do you think? "

VFX

: 131—46

Baxter pulls up an image of Proxima b’s magnetic fields. Blue iridescent aurorae illuminate its poles.

: 131—48

DYSON " It is huge. Way bigger than Earth’s. "

As she listens, Clarke has had enough.

VFX

: 131—49

BAXTER " It would mean the geoglyphs are somehow interacting directly with the magnetosphere. "

: 131—50

Clarke lowers her chair and jumps to collect her gear.

: 131—51

CLARKE " Guys. Less talk. More action. I’m taking over the mission. Baxter, grab your gear. We’re driving out to Node Two-Twelve to find out what’s going on and fix this thing. "

: 131—52

BAXTER " Two-Twelve? "

: 131—53

CLARKE " The closest one. A five-hour drive. (to Dyson) Get Omni installed and up to speed. Then use the X-Doc and fix whatever the hell is wrong with you. "

: 131—54

Weary, Baxter stands and reluctantly grabs her EVA equipment.

: 131—55

Both women put on their SNOOPY CAPS.

: 131—56

DYSON " Listen, if you’re going out there, could you grab me a sample? "

: 131—57

CLARKE " A sample of what? "

: 131—58

DYSON " The geoglyph. I want to run some tests. It would help to have a chunk of the actual material. "

: 131—59

CLARKE " Kyle, we need to focus on the mission. We can deal with the science shit later. "

: 131—60

BAXTER " He’s right, kiddo. Two-Twelve is on top of a major formation. If it’s a part of what’s causing the issue, we could use a sample. "

: 131—61

CLARKE " Fine. (opening the hatch) On the way, I want you to figure out how to create a firewall that will block further E-M-Ps from messing with the shield. "

: 131—62

BAXTER " I’ll see what I can do. "

: 131—63

Baxter follows suit, donning her mask.

Baxter sips coffee from her AutoBrew.

: 146—05

BAXTER " Yeah, someday. Until then, at least we’ll have something to eat. "

: 146—06

CLARKE (sarcastic) " Algae. Yum. "

: 146—07

CLARKE (fighting back tears) " It might seem crazy, but I was excited to live here with Jim. "

: 146—08

Baxter nods supportively.

BAXTER " I get it. "

Clarke pulls herself together and returns to her seat.

There she reviews a real-time MAP on a nearby monitor.

: 146—11

CLARKE " We’ll be there in an hour. "

: 146—12

BAXTER " Yep. While you were sleeping, I created a patch that’ll reconfigure the shield to block power surges. Even sent it to Dyson for testing. "

Clarke leans forward to return the Omni Disc to Baxter.

: 146—18

CLARKE " This is great. Thank you. "

: 146—19

BAXTER " No problem. It’s why I’m here. "

: 146—21

Clarke breaks the tension.

: 146—22

CLARKE " What was it like on Earth? "

: 146—23

BAXTER " I suppose not that different from the Odyssey in the end. If you were lucky enough to live in the domes. "

: 146—24

CLARKE " Domes. I can't imagine being stupid enough to destroy your own planet. How’d it happen? "

: 146—25

BAXTER " Before I was born, the permafrost melted. Released a huge methane plume. That was the tipping point. Runaway greenhouse effect."

: 146—26

BAXTER (CONT) " (shaking her head) There was no turning back. By the time we left, Earth was on its way to becoming another Venus. "

CLARKE " And now the human race traded one type of desolation for another. "

CLARKE " Three of us. Me, Kyle... And Jim. "

Baxter tries to keep the mood light by distracting Clarke.

: 148—05

BAXTER " What about your parents? Are they excited to get down here? "

: 148—06

CLARKE " My mom died ten years ago. She was out in a BottleSuit doing a repair after a micro-meteor strike. She Saved the ship. Helluva pilot. "

CLARKE " Thanks. My dad... He’s a popsicle. "

: 148—09

BAXTER " Really? How is that possible? "

: 148—10

CLARKE " Long story. You know, the ship’s prime crew was supposed to take turns in hibernation. Ten years awake. Ten asleep. Right? "

: 148—12

CLARKE " I was an accident that happened during my folks’ second shift. "

: 148—13

BAXTER " Seriously? "

: 148—14

CLARKE " Oh yeah. And since pregnancies can’t be maintained during suspended animation, they decided to have me and stay awake. "

: 148—15

Clarke taps her implant, sending an image to Baxter’s disc.

: 148—16

CLARKE (CONT’D) " Take a look at this. "

: 148—17

Baxter smiles at the photo. It’s of three small CHILDREN -- younger versions of Clarke, Corey, and Dyson. The kids wear two-tone JUMPSUITS and stand in an access way on the Odyssey.

: 148—18

BAXTER " The Captain’s Mod Squad... "

: 148—19

Clarke nods. Baxter moves over to the rear seat beside her.

: 148—20

BAXTER (CONT’D) " So, Kyle must be the youngest. "

: 148—21

CLARKE " Right. Jim and Kyle were accidents too. Once they were born, the Captain put his foot down. "

: 148—22

BAXTER " I bet. More mouths to feed. "

: 148—23

CLARKE " The ship didn’t have the resources to support unplanned children. So my dad went into deep freeze. "

: 148—24

BAXTER " Quite the sacrifice. "

: 148—25

CLARKE " God, I miss him. Such a cool guy. When we were young, Jim was into watching old sports broadcasts. But me and Kyle, we played with Earth trading cards. "

: 148—26

Clarke reaches into a pocket on her suit and pulls out a cardsized, dog-eared printout of the Eiffel Tower.

: 148—27

CLARKE (CONT’D) " My dad made them for us. Landmarks like the Grand Canyon, the Great Pyramid, and a bunch more. We eventually got Jim into them too. "

: 148—28

BAXTER " Never got to see any of those. "

: 148—29

CLARKE " Really? Where did you grow up? "

: 148—30

BAXTER " Illinois. My folks were farmers. But drought ended that. They were going to Mars, but... I’m sure you heard what happened there. "

CLARKE " Yeah. Sounds horrible. "

: 165—14

CLARKE " It's a lot warmer over here. "

: 165—15

BAXTER " Imagine how hot it must be down at the equator. It's always high noon. "

: 165—16

Unlike other areas of the planet seen previously, this environment is eerily silent.

: 165—17

Baxter walks to the node.

: 165—18

Connected to its metal truss is a power supply and COMPUTER INTERFACE.

: 165—19

Lights flash on its face indicating an ‘offline’ status.

: 165—20

Baxter sets down the toolkit.

: 165—21

BAXTER (CONT’D) I'll pop the main board and upload the new firewall.

: 165—22

Baxter uses a DRILL to remove screws.

: 165—23

Bored, Clarke walks around the aeroshell.

: 165—24

Baxter pulls a large NODE-BOARD from its housing.

: 165—25

Clarke stops and looks at Baxter with a frown.

: 165—26

CLARKE " What do you think it's like? "

: 165—27

BAXTER " What is 'what' like? "

: 165—28

CLARKE " Earth. What's left? Who's left? "

: 165—29

CLARKE (concerned) " We received transmissions for a long time, but then they stopped. "

: 165—30

Baxter ceases working and looks in Clarke's direction.

: 165—31

BAXTER " No one told me that! That's crazy. Valkyrie and Phoenix were still under construction when we left. Each was going to carry a hundred thousand people. "

: 165—32

CLARKE " That was over fifty years ago. What do you think happened? "

: 165—33

BAXTER " No idea. I’ll have to discuss it with Captain Shepard. "

: 165—35

Baxter returns to work, giving the board a visual once-over.

: 165—36

She notices a faint electrical DISCHARGE that briefly cascades across its crystal circuity, then dissipates.

: 165—37

BAXTER (CONT’D) " This node got hit by a pulse too. "

: 165—38

Baxter activates a computer screen above the node slots.

: 165—39

She checks the power flow. It PULSES strangely.

: 165—40

BAXTER (CONT’D) " Weird. It looks like there’s current coming from somewhere other than the fuel cells. "

: 165—41

On the other side of the tower, a shocking image stops Clarke in her tracks.

: 165—42

CLARKE " Engineer? Can you come here? "

: 165—46

CLARKE (OFF SCREEN) " Fine. Tanya, please come here! "

: 165—47

BAXTER (putting down the board) " What is it?! "

: 165—48

Standing sluggishly, Baxter walks around to Clarke's side.

: 165—49

Clarke points to the sunward area of the transmission tower.

: 165—50

The aeroshell has been violently punctured by geoglyph material!

: 165—51

It’s 'grown' up the sides of the antenna assembly.

: 165—52

CLARKE " Could it have breached on impact? "

: 165—53

The metallic glyph glints in the ochre sunlight with a texture similar to pyrite.

: 165—54

They move toward it cautiously.

: 165—55

BAXTER " No way. The tower deployment was fine. This happened after landing. "

: 165—56

Clarke removes a pickax from her utility belt and kneels near the growth...

: 165—57

...cautiously poking at a shard.

: 165—58

The protrusion continues up into the back of the node's computer system.

: 165—59

BAXTER (CONT’D) " That looks like years of growth. "

: 165—60

CLARKE " Growth? "

: 165—61

BAXTER (tapping her wrist) " AeroFox, come in. "

: 165—62

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " AeroFox, receiving. "

: 165—63

BAXTER " There's something odd out here. "

: 165—64

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " Please describe. "

: 165—65

BAXTER " Geoglyph material has ruptured the node's aeroshell. It's in direct contact with the transmitter. "

: 165—66

Baxter runs her hand over the geometrical surface.

: 165—67

CLARKE " Don’t touch it! "

: 165—68

BAXTER " Why? It’s just a rock. "

: 166—01

INT. AEROFOX

A seemingly-sleeping Dyson covertly opens one eye as video streams in showing the unusual growth.

: 166—02

OMNI " It seems highly unlikely that a breach occurred at landing. "

: 166—03

CLARKE (COMM VOICE) " Obviously not. The geoglyph has grown through it. "

: 166—04

Weak, Dyson sits up and speaks.

DYSON " Get a sample... "

: 166—05

CLARKE (COMM VOICE) " What? "

: 166—06

OMNI " Kyle is reminding you to obtain a sample. However, the flare will arrive within ten minutes. You should find shelter immediately. "

: 166—07

Dyson flops back on his couch in frustration.

DYSON " C'mon... "

: 167—01

EXT. SHIELD NODE

Clarke quickly stands.

: 167—02

The two women turn to look up at the flaming orb of Proxima Centauri.

: 167—03

CLARKE " Switch your glasses to U-V mode. "

: 167—04

They both tap buttons on their wrists -- their lenses darken.

: 167—05

The U-V Mode takes light in the ultraviolet spectrum and makes it visible on their head-up displays.

: 167—06

From Baxter's POV, the tendrils of numerous lethal flares writhe along the flank of the red dwarf star.

: 167—07

BAXTER " Oh, my God. "

: 167—08

DYSON (COMM VOICE) " Guys, please... Just one piece. "

: 167—09

Turning back to the geoglyph, Baxter makes a decision.

: 167—10

BAXTER " Kyle, you got it. We’ll get right back to you. "

: 167—11

She leaves Clarke behind, heading toward the TerraCat.

: 167—12

CLARKE " Where are you going? "

: 167—13

BAXTER " To get a soil-core. Use the pickax. Break some off! "

: 167—14

Back at the TerraCat, Baxter climbs into the vehicle.

: 167—15

Meanwhile, Clarke hacks at the geoglyph with a ferocity that belies her fear of the alien rock.

: 167—16

She stops to look at the raging Proxima, then returns to work.

: 167—17

Fragments of pyrite fly off.

: 167—18

Clarke is caught unaware when Baxter admonishes her.

: 167—19

BAXTER (CONT’D) " Stop! Jesus. We just need a piece. "

: 167—20

Baxter carries a SOIL-CORE -- a clear plastic tube with a handle on top.

: 167—21

In near panic, Clarke snaps the pickax onto her utility belt.

: 167—22

She glances again at the sky.

CLARKE " We gotta get outta here. "

: 167—23

BAXTER (pointing) " Fire up the Cat! "

: 167—24

Clarke takes off for the rover while Baxter places geoglyph shards into the soil-core.

: 167—25

On the way, Clarke notices the computer board that Baxter removed earlier.

: 167—27

Baxter stands, grimacing in the high gravity as she seals it tight.

VFX

: 167—28

She checks the RADIATION DETECTOR on her flash scanner. It’s into the RED.

: 167—29

Her suit speaks with authority.

SUIT VOICE " Radiation levels rising! "

: 169—01

EXT. SHIELD NODE

As Baxter turns to leave, she stops, noticing with horror that the geoglyph is GROWING BACK!

: 169—02

[AddDescriptiveText]

: 169—03

Baxter lifts the soil-core and looks at the material inside with grave concern. Should she even take it back with her?

: 170—01

INT. TERRACAT

Clarke buckles her seatbelt as Baxter climbs into the cabin, holding the soil-core.

: 170—02

Baxter sits in the seat across from Clarke and pushes the soil-core container into view.

: 170—03

She pushes the soil-core container into Clarke's view.

: 170—04

BAXTER " Back there, where you chipped this off, it's already growing back. "

: 170—05

CLARKE " What do you mean? "

: 170—06

BAXTER " I mean, it's growing back! "

: 170—07

CLARKE " So, you’re saying... "

: 170—08

BAXTER " I’m saying I don't think this is a rock. It’s something else. "

: 170—09

Clarke's eyes widen in fear, staring at the geoglyph sample.

: 170—10

CLARKE " Then get it outta here! "

: 170—11

Baxter is taken aback by Clarke's vehemence.

: 170—12

BAXTER " No! (scanning the container) It seems inert. It needs to be studied. "

: 170—13

An alarm tone sounds followed by the voice of the TerraCat.

: 170—14

TERRACAT " Warning! Radiation alert. Seek shelter immediately! "

: 170—15

Clarke shakes her head, then fires an angry look at Baxter.

: 170—16

CLARKE " Buckle in. "

: 170—17

CLARKE (pointing at the core) " And keep an eye on that shit! "

: 170—18

Baxter buckles up, keeping the container between her feet.

: 170—19

CLARKE (CONT’D) " TerraCat, take us to Crater X-B71. "

: 170—20

TERRACAT " Understood. Proceeding to crater. "

: 170—21

The rover's engine revs and whines, but the vehicle is unable to move! The women are jostled hard.

: 170—22

BAXTER " What the hell? "

: 170—23

CLARKE " TerraCat, reverse! Full throttle. "

: 170—24

The engine revs louder, but still the rover goes nowhere.

: 170—25

CLARKE (CONT’D) " It’s not the engine. "

: 170—26

TERRACAT " Encountering an obstruction. "

: 170—27

The women look at each other with disbelief.

: 171—01

EXT. TERRACAT

The rover's rear wheels are now encompassed in the geoglyph! It slowly extends from the ground. The two women stare at the advancing substance.

: 171—02

CLARKE " Now, it's coming after us! "

: 171—03

BAXTER " We don't know that. Maybe it's a coincidence. "

: 171—04

CLARKE " Gimme a break! "

: 171—05

SUIT VOICE " Radiation near fatal exposure. "

: 171—06

Baxter glances between the tires and the fiery star.

: 171—07

BAXTER " We better hustle. "

: 171—08

CLARKE " The self-drive is too slow! "

: 171—09

BAXTER (taking Clarke's pickax) " Get inside and set the TerraCat to manual. Gun it! "

: 171—10

CLARKE " Manual..? "

: 171—11

BAXTER " You can fly a spaceship, but you can't drive a car? "

: 171—12

CLARKE " Like we have cars on Odyssey! "

: 171—13

Baxter shoves the pickax back at her.

: 171—14

BAXTER " Break us out. "

: 171—15

Clarke takes the pickax and strikes the geoglyph growing around the tires.

: 171—16

Shards of metallic rock explode away.

: 172—01

INT. TERRACAT

Inside the TerraCat, Baxter straps herself into one of the rear-facing front seats.

: 172—02

BAXTER " TerraCat, disengage self-drive! "

: 172—03

TERRACAT " Manual steering activated. "

: 172—04

Baxter's seat rotates into the forward drive position.

: 172—05

A steering column automatically advances toward her.

: 172—06

She puts her hands on the wheel.

: 173—01

EXT. TERRACAT

Outside, Clarke makes good headway on removing the geoglyph.

: 173—02

CLARKE " I think I got it! "

: 174—01

INT. TERRACAT

Within the rover, Baxter now has it at full power. She turns and yells to Clarke through the open door.

: 174—02

BAXTER " That's good! Back away! "

: 174—03

Baxter guns it. Its electric engine whines loudly, but the rover fails to move.

On the horizon, Proxima grows brighter.

: 175—02

CLARKE " Hold up! "

INT. TERRACAT

Baxter is driving like a maniac.

VFX

Clarke is strapped into her seat, checking their detectors –

VFX

they're in the red zone!

: 178—04

TERRACAT " Radiation levels rising. "

VFX

: 178—05

BAXTER " Am I going in the right direction? "

The soil-core is tossed about the cabin.

: 178—07

They close in on the crater.

: 178—08

Clarke points toward a sandy ridge on the horizon. She points toward a sandy ridge on the horizon.

CLARKE " There! "

VFX

EXT. CRATER

The TerraCat speeds across the plain, jumping over the rim of the crater.

VFX

EXT. CRATER

The near side of the crater’s bowl-shaped valley is in deep
shadow. The rover drives to the far side and plunges in.

[The rover rushes forward]

VFX

[The TerraCat stops and powers down]

VFX

: 182—01

INT. TERRACAT

Baxter powers down the engine.

VFX

: 182—02

She looks to Clarke for confirmation that they are safe. Clarke checks the monitor.

VFX

: 182—03

The radiation levels are dropping.

: 182—04

They both breathe a sigh of relief, removing their masks and glasses.

: 182—05

After a breath, Clarke is the first to freak out.

: 182—06

CLARKE " I may not have grown up on Earth, but I know rocks don't do that. "

: 182—07

Baxter sees the node-board secured in a slot on the dash.

: 182—08

BAXTER " You grabbed the node-board. "

: 182—09

CLARKE " Yeah. I plugged it in while you were out scooping up rock monster. "

: 182—10

BAXTER (checking its status) " The firewall’s been uploaded. "

: 182—11

CLARKE " Good. "

: 182—12

That’s why we're out here. Baxter nods and points to the soil-core.

: 182—13

Clarke spins her seat ninety degrees, looking around. She spies the soil-core.

: 182—16

She opens a port on the dash and pops the cylinder inside.

: 182—17

BAXTER (CONT’D) " We need Omni to do an analysis. "

: 182—18

Clarke nods and plays with the comm-system.

VFX

: 182—19

CLARKE " AeroFox, do you read? After a moment, a weak static-laden connection is made. "

: 182—20

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " Roger, TerraCat. Are you alright? "

: 182—21

CLARKE " We’re fine. We’re riding the flare out in the shadow of that crater. "

: 182—22

BAXTER " We grabbed Kyle’s sample. Transmitting the data now. "

: 182—23

CLARKE " Omni, it tried to eat the TerraCat! We barely made it out of there. "

: 182—24

BAXTER " She's exaggerating. "

VFX

: 182—25

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " Hmmm... The material must have been attracted to the rover's energy output. I believe the same thing happened with the shield node. "

: 182—26

Baxter has a sudden revelation.

: 182—27

BAXTER " ‘Energy output’? Wait a minute... When we were in orbit, I overheard Kyle saying the glyphs looked shriveled up. Can I talk to him? "

VFX

: 182—28

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " No. He lost consciousness a bit ago. I’d rather not wake him. However, I can find the images he was referring to. Just a moment... "

VFX

: 182—29

Onscreen, pictures of the geoglyphs appear side by side.

VFX

: 182—30

OMNI (COMM VOICE) (CONT’D) " Interesting. When recent imagery is compared to that of a century ago, every formation has been affected. "

: 182—31

The older images are clear and distinct, while the newer ones look smaller and anemic.

VFX

: 182—32

BAXTER " Like flowers without water. Omni... What if we’re killing it? "

: 182—33

CLARKE " 'Killing it'? You’re acting like it’s alive. It’s a fucking rock! "

VFX

: 182—34

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " Language, Astronaut Clarke... "

: 182—35

Clarke rolls her eyes.

: 182—37

BAXTER " Is it a rock or a monster, kiddo? "

: 182—38

Clarke has nothing to say.

VFX

: 182—39

Omni adds to Baxter’s idea.

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " Your hypothesis is fascinating, Engineer Baxter. If true, what do we do about it? "

: 182—40

BAXTER " We have to shut down the shield until we figure it all out. "

: 182—41

CLARKE " How about the opposite? What if we upload your firewall to the entire shield grid? Then add a firmware update that increased power? "

VFX

: 182—42

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " Um... That would cause significant damage to the geoglyphs. "

: 182—43

BAXTER " Darcy, you want to destroy an indigenous species before we learn how it’s alive in the first place. "

: 182—44

CLARKE " Sorry. Whatever those things are, they’re jeopardizing our mission. It's us or them. "

: 182—45

OMNI (COMM VOICE) That may be unintentional. This is an unprecedented discovery. It requires further study.

: 182—46

CLARKE " No. Send another data-pac, Omni. Tell them these organisms have attacked us multiple times. (steeling herself) And we’re fighting back. "

: 182—47

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " I must protest! Fact-based decision making requires-- "

: 182—48

CLARKE (interrupting) " Shut up! Send the message. "

: 182—49

Baxter can tell something bigger is going on with Clarke.

: 182—50

BAXTER " Omni, how long will the flare last? "

: 182—51

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " Four and a half hours. "

: 182—52

BAXTER " We’ll be in touch. TerraCat out. "

: 182—53

Baxter shuts off the comms and turns to chat as Clarke sits.

: 182—54

BAXTER (CONT’D) " Darcy, destroying the geoglyphs won’t bring Jim back. "

: 182—55

CLARKE " Don’t you think I know that?! "

: 182—56

BAXTER " Then why are you doing this? "

: 182—57

Ignoring Baxter, Clarke grabs her O2 mask and an Omni Disc from its CHARGING CRADLE on the wall.

: 182—58

CLARKE " Better put your mask on. "

: 182—60

CLARKE " Because I'm going for a walk. "

: 183—01

INT. AEROFOX

Dyson is awake. He rips off the X-Doc and tosses it aside.

: 183—02

OMNI " What are you doing? "

: 183—03

DYSON " She's gonna kill it! "

: 183—04

He collapses onto the floor. The gyroscope falls beside him.

: 183—05

DYSON (CONT’D) " If she uploads the firewall, we'll never stop it. "

VFX

: 183—06

OMNI " I insist you replace the X-Doc and return to bed! The nano-procedure is only eighteen percent complete. "

: 183—07

Dyson pulls himself across the floor, dragging his numb legs.

: 183—08

DYSON " This is more important... "

: 183—09

Omni gives in. He removes the bed and deploys a stool and keyboard at the science station for Dyson's task.

: 183—10

Dyson finally reaches the station.

: 183—11

With a pained face, he grabs the seat as leverage, hauling himself halfway up.

: 183—12

DYSON (CONT’D) " The geoglyph isn't life as we know it. But it’s alive. What do we know about its composition? "

: 183—13

Dyson manages his way into the seat and orients himself. A data analysis of the sample pops up onscreen.

VFX

: 183—14

OMNI " It's made of copper and iridium. The same materials as myself and many other quantum computers. Yet, this one appears to be self organized. Perhaps even self-aware. "

: 183—15

DYSON " And we wanted to build roads and cities out of it. How much have we destroyed? "

VFX

: 183—16

OMNI " Based on my calculations, nearly eighty percent. "

: 183—17

DYSON " The shield was active for two years. Did the geoglyphs try to talk to us in that time? Look for odd fluctuations in the system. "

: 183—18

A DATABASE of the shield operation scrolls onscreen. ENERGY SPIKES appear in the history of the power flow.

: 183—19

OMNI " It appears that on seven separate occasions, the geoglyphs attempted to make contact with our computer system via electromagnetic pulses. "

: 183—20

DYSON " My god... When shield built up enough low-frequency radio waves to block out the flares, the geoglyphs starved. They had to fight back. "

: 183—21

OMNI " It’s akin to an immune response. "

: 183—22

DYSON " Like colonists bringing smallpox. It’s goddamned genocide! Weak from the realization, he collapses against the station. "

: 183—24

DYSON " I'm okay. We need to call Darcy. "

VFX

: 183—25

Onscreen, the comm system attempts to contact the TerraCat.

OMNI " I’m trying. Unfortunately, the flare has jammed communications. "

VFX

: 183—27

OMNI " Kyle, you're rapidly approaching the point of no return. You have to restart the treatment. "

: 183—28

DYSON " No. We need to figure out what makes these things tick... Before it’s too late. "

VFX

EXT. SPACE, NEAR PROXIMA B

Seen from orbit, Proxima Centauri continues to cook the planet with its flares.

VFX

: 187—02

Over the fiery images, the calm and rational voice of Clarke’s father, Sebastian, can be heard.

VFX

: 187—03

SEBASTIAN (V.O.) " Hey, Peanut. I’m making this for you just in case something goes wrong and I never wake up. Who am I kidding? Of course, I’ll wake up. "

VFX

: 187—04

The massive, mysterious geoglyphs bake in the stellar fire.

VFX

: 187—05

SEBASTIAN (V.O.) " I have to be there to see you and Jim and Kyle take your fist steps on Proxima b. I know it’s going to hard for us to be apart, but I’m doing this for you guys. "

[Moving closer still]

: 188—10

Her jaw drops as Baxter takes the container and edges it into the reddish sunlight.

: 188—11

CLARKE " What are you doing? "

: 188—12

BAXTER " A little experiment. "

: 188—13

The seemingly-inert metallic material begins to MOVE and EXPAND when exposed to the radioactive glare.

: 188—14

Amazed, Baxter pulls it back into the shade where it immediately REFREEZES.

: 188—15

Baxter holds up the soil-core, attempting to try it again.

: 188—16

Clarke drops the Omni Disc and jogs toward Baxter.

: 188—17

CLARKE " Baxter, you need to stop! "

: 188—18

Ignoring Clarke, Baxter sticks the geoglyph back into the light.

: 188—19

This time its growth is exponential.

: 188—20

The container EXPLODES!

: 188—21

Completely unprepared, Baxter falls backward.

: 188—22

The geoglyph material drops onto the ground before her.

: 188—23

Now fed by the star’s radiation, TENDRILS of pyrite expand from the sample in a star-like pattern.

: 188—24

A miniature version of the enormous formations is replicating inside the crater!

: 188—25

Baxter’s foot is exposed to the sun’s rays.

: 188—26

Before she can pull it back, a small portion of geoglyph encompasses it!

: 188—27

Clarke runs to Baxter’s side, kicking the material away.

: 188—28

She drags the engineer into the crater’s shadow...

: 188—29

... as the geoglyph continues growing into the basin of the sunlit crater.

: 188—30

BAXTER " Thanks. That was stupid. "

: 188—31

CLARKE " Yeah, it sure as hell was. "

: 188—32

Baxter looks at the material glistening in the sunlight.

: 188—33

BAXTER " It feeds on daylight. "

: 188—34

Must be why it’s on this side of the planet.

: 188—35

CLARKE " Who cares? "

: 188—36

BAXTER " You’re not even curious about it? "

: 188—37

CLARKE " No. I just want it gone. "

: 190—02

CLARKE " You alright? "

: 190—03

BAXTER " The gravity. Starting to get to me. "

: 190—04

Baxter points to the growing, baby geoglyph.

BAXTER (CONT’D) " I want to know how long it’s been here. Does it think? Or feel? "

: 190—05

CLARKE " Why all the questions? It’s an alien. That’s all I need to know. "

: 190—06

Baxter leans back against the rear of the rover.

: 190—07

BAXTER " John would’ve agreed with you. "

: 190—08

CLARKE " John? "

: 190—09

BAXTER " My husband. "

: 190—10

CLARKE " Is he on Odyssey? "

: 190—11

BAXTER " No. Stayed on Earth. He was afraid to come here. Worried some bug-eyed monster would eat us or something. "

: 190—12

CLARKE " Guess he was right. "

: 190—13

BAXTER " Really? That’s a monster to you? I see the unknown. I see a lifeform we never could have imagined. What I don’t see is an enemy. "

: 190—14

Baxter looks at Clarke as if the young woman’s fear was pathetic. Clarke descends from the roof of the TerraCat.

: 190—15

BAXTER (CONT’D) " People like you and John live in fear. Sorry, I think it’s sad. "

: 190—16

CLARKE " So you just gave up on him? And left him behind? "

: 190—17

BAXTER " The shield was too important. And, honestly, I was tired. I didn't want to put up with it anymore. Earth. Him. Any of it. I was done. "

: 190—18

Unexpectedly, the comm-system chimes in their O2 masks.

: 190—19

TERRACAT " Receiving an X-Band transmission. "

: 190—20

BAXTER " X-Band? That’s not from Omni. "

: 190—21

Clarke checks her wrist computer.

: 190—22

CLARKE " It’s a message from Odyssey. "

: 191—01

INT. TERRACAT - SECONDS LATER

Inside the TerraCat, a side monitor in the passenger section flares to life.

: 191—02

Static obscures an incoming message.

VFX

: 191—03

Both women have removed their masks and are in the middle of watching Captain Shepard's recording.

: 191—04

SHEPARD (ON SCREEN) " Darcy, I hope you’re receiving this. We got Omni’s message. I’m speechless. I can’t believe something’s alive on Proxima b. And that it killed Jim! I’m so sorry. "

: 191—05

Clarke fights back tears at the mention of Corey’s name.

: 191—06

SHEPARD (ON SCREEN) (CONT’D) " The geoglyphs span half the planet. Whatever the hell they are, we have to stop them. The problem is... We only brought a few law enforcement officers with minimal weaponry. How do we defend ourselves? "

: 191—07

Hearing Shepard's perspective, Baxter seethes with anger.

: 191—08

BAXTER " This is nuts. "

: 191—09

SHEPARD (ON SCREEN)(continuing) " If you have a way to fight back then, by all means, do so. We need that shield. I hope Baxter’s close to getting it up and running. "

: 191—10

SHEPARD (ON SCREEN) (determined) " When we hit orbit, I’m coming down there with a science team. And, if we can’t discover what these things are and how to reason with them, I’m gonna figure out a way to kick some alien ass. Shepard out. "

: 191—11

The transmission ends. Baxter is incredulous.

VFX

: 191—12

BAXTER " You see what you’ve done? Now the Captain’s preparing for battle with a massive rock. A rock, Darcy! "

: 191—13

CLARKE " He has no choice. He has to get everyone down here before the ship falls apart. Odyssey is dying. "

: 191—14

BAXTER " Dying? What are you talking about? "

: 191—15

The conversation is interrupted by Omni’s voice.

: 191—16

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " AeroFox to TerraCat. Do you read? "

: 191—17

CLARKE " We're here, AeroFox. "

VFX

: 191—18

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " I'm calling about Kyle. "

: 191—19

CLARKE " Kyle? What's wrong? "

: 191—20

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " He refused treatment and is nonresponsive. I need your help. "

: 191—21

CLARKE " We're on our way. "

VFX

: 192—01

EXT. CRATER

Moments later, the TerraCat cruises past the slowly-growing, infant geoglyph and exits the crater.

VFX

: 192—02

It enters into the blazing red sun and heads for the distant terminator storm.

VFX

: 192—03

[The crater’s shadowy indentation rests behind the TerraCat and beneath the glowing orb of Proxima.]

VFX

[The TerraCat drives out of frame.]

VFX

[The TerraCat drives towards the ominous wall of clouds and darkness that represents the planet’s terminator.]

FADE TO

: 193—01

INT. TERRACAT

Inside the TerraCat, Baxter swerves to avoid a boulder. Clarke checks their rad-detectors -- they remain in the red!

: 193—02

CLARKE " I'm not sure if I'm sick from radiation or your driving. "

: 193—03

BAXTER " Probably both. "

VFX

: 193—04

Nauseated, Clarke shuts her eyes. Baxter is concerned.

: 193—05

BAXTER (CONT’D) " Listen, kiddo. We need to talk about this Odyssey thing. What the hell’s wrong with the ship? "

VFX

: 193—06

CLARKE " According to Jim, pretty much every thing that could be. Life support’s almost gone. The engines are dead. Systems failing in every section. "

VFX

: 193—07

Baxter glances back to examine Clarke’s face.

: 193—08

BAXTER " You worried about your dad? "

: 193—09

CLARKE " What do you think? "

VFX

: 195—01

EXT. PROXIMA B, MOUNTAINS

The rover traverses the hellish darkness and lightning between the mountains.

Finally, it exits the canyon.

VFX

: 195—02

Up ahead, the beacon of the AeroFox flashes on the horizon.

: 196—01

INT. AEROFOX

The airlock opens. Baxter is the first inside.

VFX

: 196—01

She rushes to the aid of Dyson, who is slumped against the science station.

: 196—01

CLARKE " Oh, my God. "

: 196—02

Baxter places a hand on his head as Clarke closes the hatch.

: 196—03

Her touch causes the inert Dyson to slump against her arm.

: 196—04

Baxter catches his lifeless body and gently lays it on the floor.

: 196—05

She sits down against the central column and cradles Dyson's torso in her arms.

: 196—06

Clarke takes a knee nearby and turns to look at Omni.

: 196—07

CLARKE (CONT’D) " What happened to the nanotreatment? "

VFX

: 196—08

OMNI " Kyle ended it. He worked until his injuries became lethal. "

VFX

: 196—09

OMNI(remorseful) " I watched him die. "

: 196—10

BAXTER " If only we'd gotten here sooner. "

VFX

: 196—11

Omni’s animated infinity symbol droops and moves slowly.

VFX

: 196—12

OMNI " It wouldn't have mattered. His life functions had terminated before I contacted you in the crater. "

: 196—13

CLARKE " What? You lied to us! "

VFX

: 196—14

OMNI " No. I said he was 'non-responsive'. That was the truth. "

VFX

: 196—15

OMNI (pained) " It was Kyle's final request to force you to return. "

: 196—16

CLARKE " He sacrificed his life?! Why? "

VFX

: 196—17

OMNI " I’ll let him explain. He left you a message. "

VFX

: 196—18

Dyson appears on-screen above the science station. Pale, shaking, and covered in a fevered sweat, he speaks quietly.

VFX

: 196—19

DYSON (ON MONITOR) " Hey, guys... If you’re seeing this, you made it back. Hopefully before that damned firewall got uploaded. "

VFX

: 196—20

The screen shows Dyson on the left and data on the right.

VFX

: 196—21

DYSON (ON MONITOR) (CONT’D) " I analyzed your geoglyph sample. I also ran through the logs of the shield system. The organism tried to communicate several times. "

VFX

: 196—22

DYSON (ON MONITOR) (CONT’D) (breathing in pain) " Only when those attempts failed did it strike out to protect itself. "

VFX

: 196—23

The logs pop up showing the SPIKES in energy input.

VFX

: 196—24

DYSON (ON MONITOR) (CONT’D) " Notice I said ‘geoglyph’ not ‘geoglyphs’. That’s right. We’re dealing with one individual. A single interconnected being. "

VFX

: 196—25

An orbital image of the geoglyph formation appears.

DYSON (ON MONITOR) (CONT’D) " It’s like a giant solar cell spread across the entire sunward side. (rubs his eyes) It’s evolved to absorb stellar flares... Living off them. "

VFX

: 196—26

DYSON (ON MONITOR) (CONT’D) (struggling to breathe) " It even powers the volcanos -- part of why this planet has such a thick C-O-2 atmosphere. "

: 196—27

Still holding Dyson, Baxter sees his gyroscope on the floor.

VFX

: 196—28

DYSON (ON MONITOR) (CONT’D) " Darcy, I know you’re pissed. But don’t be. I had to figure this out. We have to learn to live with it-- "

VFX

: 196—29

The recording is cut off as Clarke stalks forward in anger and slams a button on the console.

VFX

: 196—30

CLARKE " That thing shut down the shield. Crashed the AstroBug! Killed Jim! And Kyle died to protect it? "

VFX

: 196—31

OMNI " He died to expose the truth. "

: 196—32

CLARKE " What truth? "

VFX

: 196—33

OMNI " That this is a sentient lifeform. And that we attacked it first. "

: 196—34

BAXTER " And now we’ve got Shepard on his way -- planning to kill it. I designed the shield to save lives not end them! "

: 196—35

CLARKE " Goddamn it! I told the Captain the truth. We have an enemy on this planet and it doesn’t want us here! "

VFX

: 196—36

OMNI " I doubt it's that discerning. While it may perceive computers like me as a form of life, humans would be virtually incomprehensible to it. "

: 196—37

CLARKE " Whatever. "

: 196—38

Baxter claps back at Clarke angrily.

: 196—39

BAXTER " You know... If we could find a way to talk to it, you might be shocked at how irrelevant you really are. "

: 196—40

Clarke decides not to respond. She looks to the door.

: 196—41

CLARKE " We need to get back to that shield. (to Baxter) First, I need your help outside. "

: 196—42

BAXTER " With what? "

: 196—43

CLARKE " Giving my friend Kyle a decent burial. I’m all that’s left of the Mod Squad. It’s the least I can do. "

VFX

: 197—01

EXT. PROXIMA B, ORBIT

Seen from space, the perpetual terminator storm rages.

: 198—01

EXT. AEROFOX, LANDING SITE

It's snowing heavily. About thirty meters from the ship, the women pile the last ROCKS on a BURIAL MOUND.

: 198—02

As a finishing touch, Clarke kneels, placing Dyson's gyroscope on top.

: 198—03

CLARKE " He wanted to call this planet ‘Persephone’. We should honor that. "

: 198—04

BAXTER " I agree. Listen, kiddo, we better get back for the rad treatment. "

: 198—05

Clarke stands up. Her body language is aggressive.

: 198—06

CLARKE " Fine... I just hate the idea of sitting around for hours when we could be out there doing something. "

: 198—07

Baxter steps in front of Clarke to face her.

: 198—08

BAXTER " What we should be doing is waiting for the Captain and his science team. But after your bullshit message, you’ve got him planning for a war we can’t even fight. "

: 198—09

CLARKE " But we can! With your shield, we can kill it. "

: 198—10

The reference to her invention infuriates Baxter.

: 198—11

BAXTER " I told you no! Over my dead body. (pulling herself together) Darcy, think about it. If the people who planned to settle this planet knew there was an organism covering half of it, they never would’ve sent us. "

: 198—12

CLARKE " That’s your opinion. Maybe they would’ve done whatever was necessary to save humanity. "

: 198—13

BAXTER " What if we changed the plan? We could land everyone on the dark side and leave the other hemisphere for the geoglyph. "

: 198—14

CLARKE " No! The algae farms and hab-modules are over there. It's not like we can move them to this hellhole. "

: 198—15

BAXTER " The day side isn’t a Garden of Eden either. From an engineering standpoint, it wouldn’t be any harder to survive over here. "

: 198—16

CLARKE " Are you kidding? Look around! "

: 198—17

BAXTER " We can’t argue about this anymore. Let’s wait until Captain Shepard arrives. He can decide what to do. "

: 198—18

CLARKE " Shepard? He agrees with me! You heard him. He ordered us to fight! "

: 198—19

Baxter puts a matronly hand on Clarke’s shoulder.

: 198—20

BAXTER " I know coming down here has been hard on you. You’ve lost a lot. "

: 198—21

Infuriated, Clarke slaps Baxter’s hand off.

: 198—22

CLARKE " You’re damn right I have. Jim died because of that thing! "

: 198—23

Clarke starts to move. Baxter blocks her path.

: 198—24

BAXTER " Jim died because a micro-meteor struck the AstroBug when he was trying to protect you. The geoglyph had nothing to do with it. "

: 198—25

This revelation enrages Clarke.

: 198—26

Without warning, she punches Baxter square in the stomach!

: 198—27

Caught off guard, Baxter collapses to the ground helpless.

: 198—28

Leaving her behind, Clarke stalks to the TerraCat.

: 198—29

Through a fog of pain, Baxter watches as the vehicle’s doors open...

: 198—30

...and Clarke climbs inside.

: 199—01

INT. TERRACAT

Clarke activates the self-drive and buckles her seatbelt.

CLARKE " Take me to Shield Node Two-Twelve. "

: 199—03

TERRACAT " Destination acquired. Arrival in five hours and twelve minutes. "

INT. AEROFOX, LOWER LEVEL

The hatch opens.

: 203—02

Baxter falls to the floor.

VFX

: 203—03

OMNI " What happened? "

: 203—04

BAXTER " Clarke took off in the Cat! "

: 203—05

The airlock door closes. Baxter props against it.

VFX

: 203—06

OMNI " She cannot reprogram the nodes! "

: 203—07

BAXTER " I know! I couldn't stop her. "

VFX

: 203—08

OMNI " Maybe I can. "

VFX

Clarke is enraged.

: 207—04

She looks around the cab.

Spying the rover’s COMM-MODULE, she pieces it together.

DYSON (ON MONITOR) " I know my decision probably doesn't make sense to you. But, I'm nothing in the face of this discovery. "

BAXTER " How hard can it be? "

: 216—01

EXT. AEROFOX - MINUTES LATER

Baxter is wearing her O2 mask and AR goggles. She stands on the AeroFox heat shield and surveys an access panel. She spies the slot where Clarke had removed the damaged LRU.

: 216—02

BAXTER " Someone pulled this L-R-U. "

: 216—03

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " I can print a new one. Sadly, some of the other parts needed for the repair are too complex. "

Baxter jumps off the heat shield and walks around the craft until she spots the remaining, unused satellite.

BAXTER " Sat-C looks nominal. Maybe I can cannibalize it. "

: 216—06

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " Ms. Baxter, a repair of this type typically requires up to thirty-- "

: 216—07

BAXTER (interrupting) " We don't have 'thirty' of anything. If we don't stop Clarke, she’s dead. And so is the geoglyph. I'm an engineer. This is what I do. "

OMNI (COMM VOICE) " Sure. But, you’re not a pilot. "
